NAP OF THE DAY: Fagan, (1530 Doncaster), 1pt win, 3/1:
These veteran races are the equine equivalent of golf’s senior tour, allowing a tubby Colin Montgomerie to notch a few more wins that would be beyond him on the main tour. In that context, Fagan’s runaway win in a normal Newbury handicap last time was like Monty suddenly landing the Scottish Open. Back against the pensioners, Fagan should be able to defy the weight rise.
Smokey Malone, (1230 Southwell), 5/4: has been a revelation since switching to this surface with a good runner-up effort eclipsed by an impressive win here last time when the front two were miles clear of the rest. This should be a routine follow up against poor opposition.
Igor, (1420 Doncaster), 6/1: has a less than auspicious start to his chasing career with the somewhat alarming form figures of FU. Amateur owner-jockey Waley-Cohen is top class but he gives way to top pro Nico de Boinville who is one of the best in the business at getting his Mount to jump well. If his magic unlocks this fella’s potential then he should be well in.
Portstorm, (1605 Doncaster), 7/2: out ran huge odds when runner up in a good event here last time. A 7lb rise from the handicapper is kind of non-committal as it’s more than would be warranted if the form is untrustworthy and not nearly enough if it’s solid. We’ll take the chance it can be repeated given the same course and conditions.
