FA Cup: Mounting the Wembley steps…

This evening sees one of the highlights of the English footballing season, with Chelsea taking on Leicester in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The Blues come into the game on the back of a defeat by Arsenal in the Premier League midweek, when Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel rested several of his starting lineup. That was only their third defeat in 26 games under the German, and their reaction to the previous two defeats has been very impressive – a 2-0 success over Porto in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final and a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals.

The Foxes beat a much-changed Manchester United side midweek, an important win in their pursuit of a top four finishing position, but they have suffered three defeats since the start of April, including the recent 4-2 loss at home to Newcastle. This is their fifth final appearance, and they have yet to win one – the pressure is on!

Chelsea have won all of their last five FA Cup meetings against Leicester, and we at Lap of the Odds think they will create the majority of the chances in what could be a tight affair, particularly if Leicester’s defensive linchpin Johnny Evans misses out through injury.

The Chelsea player we’ve been most impressed with this season has been Mason Mount. The midfielder has forced his way into the England team, scoring 12 goals for club and country, and we’ll take him to net today.

The other bet the springs to mind comes in the cards market. The goalkeeper of the winning team has been booked in the 93rd minute in two of the last eight FA Cup finals (2018 and 2013) – both games finished 1-0.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has been the Chelsea keeper during Chelsea’s FA Cup run, and has endured a difficult start to his career at Stamford Bridge since his high-profile move. He’ll been keen to win a trophy, and at 16/1 is a nice price to receive a yellow card for time wasting if his team are indeed winning as the end nears.
