NAP OF THE DAY:
1735 Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, Scarlet Dragon, 2pts win, 14/1
It’s deja vue as Scarlet Dragon and Holly Doyle’s weaving last to first run landed this race at 40/1 for us last year and dug us out of a hole. Well we are back in the hole but thankfully old Scarlet and Holly are back too and the forecast rain should greatly help the repeat bid. Trainer Alan King has a couple of other good chances here, but horses for courses suggests the Dragon can roar again…
REST OF THE CARD:
1430 Albany Stakes, Flotus, 1pt win 3/1
We were keen on Eve Lodge earlier in the week but she was withdraw in hope of the likely softer ground here. That makes her appealing but she is unfortunate to be bumping into one of the most impressive 2yo debutants of the season in Flotus. The Crisford trained filly crushed her rivals at Goodwood, on soft ground, and with Frankie up she looks the 2yo bet of the week.
1505 Kind Edward VII Stakes, Tasman Bay, 1pt win, 12/1
Willie Haggas trained Alenquer is all the rage after his defeat of Adayar was paid the ultimate compliment when that one won the Derby!! Measuring that form through the third though gives him less in hand than the odds suggest. We prefer a small tickle on an outsider, particularly if rain gets in the ground, and Tasman Bay has chased home a few decent horses this year. He’ll probably chase home a few more here, but if the race falls apart on this surface he could be the one to prosper.
1540 Commonwealth Cup, Suesa, 1pt win, 4/1
A cracking dash that looks best left to some foreign fillies. Measure Of Magic could outrun her odds, but it’s the American Campanelle and the French Suesa that look the most likely to fight it out. Campanelle won well here last year but hasn’t been seen this season whilst there are no doubts on Suesa’s fitness but all her impressive wins have come at Chantilly. Both have big chances but it’s the French filly who has the most appeal under a confident William Buick.
1620 Coronation Stakes, Mother Earth, 1pt win, 4/1
The colts equivalent of this race was won on Tuesday in stunning fashion by the Guineas winner and the filly’s race looks set for the same fate. Mother Earth was a surprising winner at Newmarket but ultimately a decisive one and underlined that with a strong run for second in the French Guineas. It’s been a quiet enough week for Aidan O’Brien but she should be able to add to his tally here.
1700 Sandringham Stakes, Professional Widow, 1pt each way, 28/1
Quite simply a nightmare of a race. An each way stab at a long price makes sense and no-one better to trust that with than Hayley Turner who seeks a hattrick of 33/1 winners in this race. Her ride is Professional Widow and she has a nice draw, has form on soft and was a gutsy winner last time. Will be ridden out the back and look for some luck in running but could outrun her big odds.
1810 Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes, Dream Composer, 1pt win , 16/1
Conditions could be testing by now and in those circumstances a stand side rail draw is a big help and is proven soft ground form. Dream Composer has both and comes here on a real roll and the value of jockey Laura Pearson’s claim has already been seen with a handicap win this week.
