NAP OF THE DAY: Star Of Orion, (1500 Ascot), 2pts win, 11/1:
Classy top weights Motakhayyel and Danyah could prove too good for this race, but despite the presence of a squad of old blog regulars, we are taking that pair on with a newcomer to us. Star Of Orion is a rare 3yo in one of these events and after a quiet and delayed reappearance really impressed with his win at Newmarket last time. That wasn’t as good a race as this, but it was a massive step forward and in a style that suggests much more to come. Carries a small penalty for that but still looks very well weighted and has the useful 5lb claim of Laura Pearson.
Nibras Again, (1405 York), 5/1: exposed sprinter who has been around the block a few times. Normally that wouldn’t excite, but this is a unique race being a 5f sprint for jump jockeys. The extra weight involved wouldn’t suit every horse but we know it suits this guy as he won the 2019 edition. That was off a mark of 75 back then having been raised 2lb for a narrow runner up effort in a preceding Newmarket race. Well, he was second in that same Newmarket race again last time, has been raised 2lbs, and is in here off 75. It’s deja vu….
Lahore, (1440 York), 10/1: Golden Apollo’s record in this race suggests he must go close, as must Muscika. That said the classy Lahore is another with a fine track record. He has slipped a crucial few pounds but showed promise staying on in a high quality 5f dash here recently. Most of his recent good form is at the minimum trip but on quick ground this is a very fast 6f and he has plenty of form at this trip back in his youth. Looks primed to go close with the aid of his rider’s claim.
Reina Del Mar, (1700, York), 7/2: Represents the same connections as Group 1 winning Starman and whilst not in his class this filly has been just as much a revelation this season. Won a small but quality handicap at Newbury on reappearance before being very unlucky not to repeat that victory there last time. Still looks on a favourable mark and has a great chance of gaining compensation here.
