The PGA Tour heads to Texas this week, with the Memorial Park Golf Course hosting the Houston Open.
The course is long but reasonably generous off the tee, while the undulating greens have run-off areas around them and provide the main defence of the track. This means touch on and around the greens seems essential, and with this in mind we’re going to side with Patrick Reed.
The Texan is well suited to Memorial Park given he can scramble with the best, and thus we expect him to contend. He finished second in the Bermuda Championship the week before last, thus is in form. He will be dying to return to the winners’ enclosure having missed out of Ryder Cup selection earlier in the year.
Over on the European Tour, which has recently been rebranded the DP World Tour, the players are heading to the Middle East for the Dubai Championship at the Fire Course.
The betting is headed by the likes of Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood, but we’ll steer clear given both are making their Fire Course debuts and offer thin odds. Instead we’re going to stick with a blog favourite, Min Woo Lee.
We also tipped him when he finished 8th in Portugal last week, so he’s clearly in form, and he will enjoy the likely windy conditions having grown up in Perth, western Australia. He needs a strong finish to the year to get into the top 50 in the world, and thus entry into all the major events next year, and we think he can shine this week.
