The PGA Tour stays in Hawaii this week, making the short trip from Kapalua to the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu for the Sony Open.
Australian Cameron Smith is the favourite this week after his heroics in holding off world no. 1 Jon Rahm to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions last week. He played superbly, and we wouldn’t put anyone off doubling up on him, but it’s difficult to win back-to-back and he admitted feeling tired after Sunday’s last round battle. We’ll avoid.
However, we do feel that Smith’s victory could inspire his compatriot Marc Leishman, after all thepair are good friends, winning together at the Zurich Classic pairs event last April. Leishman enjoys playing at Waialae, having posted seven top-20s, including three top-fives, in 12 visits to the course.
He warmed up with four rounds in the 60s last week, finishing in 10th place, and we think that will put him in a good place to compete for the win this week.
