European Golf: Trust Tommy at Dunhill…

The DP World Tour heads to Scotland this week, with the Dunhill Links Championship taking place at St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie.

Favourite for this event is Rory McIlroy, who came close to winning the Open at St Andrews in July. However, a best-price 9-2 does not seem to offer much value, especially given the unsettled weather forecast, with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour expected on Friday.

Instead we’re going to side with Tommy Fleetwood. The Englishman took time off after finishing fourth at St Andrews in July, taking a break after his mother died, and he was understandably rusty at the BMW PGA Championship.

His record at the Dunhill is outstanding – fifth on his debut in 2011, fifth again in 2013, second in 2014, second in 2018, fifth in 2019 and seventh last year – and we’ll take a punt on him performing well again this week.

Our each way tip is Matthew Southgate. The Englishman has been showing signs of a return to form, finishing tied 13th at the BMW PGA Championship and tied 27th at the Italian Open. He often shines in windy conditions, and could go well at a hefty price.

On the PGA Tour, the Sanderson Farms Championship takes place at the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi.

Sam Burns is the defending champion and hot favourite, but arrives having played every session in the Presidents Cup and doesn’t offer much value. Instead, we’re going to side with Robby Shelton.

The young American has already won four times on the Korn Ferry Tour, the PGA’s feeder tour, and finished 21st last time teeing up in the main tour in the Fortinet Championship. Born in Alabama, Shelton is likely to feel comfortable in the south, and offers a nice price.
