The 2022 FIFA World Cup starts later Sunday, and in our preview post we suggested subscribers took a chance on Portugal winning the event.
We also favoured France striker Karim Benzema was a good bet to be top scorer, winning the Golden Boot. However, events are overtaken that suggestion, with the Real Madrid star suffering an injury during training, ruling him out of the tournament.
Time to reload.
We still think France could score a few goals, but in Benzema’s absence a lot of the load (and defender’s attention) will fall on Kylian Mbappe. He’s undoubtedly a talented player, and shone at the last World Cup in Russia. But at half the price of Benzema, we’re less sure he represents value.
Instead we’re going to take an each way punt with Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine star has been played very well at Inter Milan, scoring 25 goals in 49 games in 21/22, form he has carried into this season. He has also translated this scoring touch onto the international stage, netting seven goals in qualifying, the same number as his more established striking partner Lionel Messi.
A lot of the focus will be on Messi as this will undoubtedly be his last chance to lift the World Cup, which may give Martinez more room to show his undoubted class.
Recommendation:
Golden Boot: Martinez (Argentina) 0.5 pts each way at 22/1, Unibet
