FIFA World Cup: Tripping the US…

England face the USA in their second game of the group stage later Friday evening, looking to add to their impressive 6-2 victory over Iran in the opening match.

Gareth Southgate’s team are heavy favourites to get the better of their trans-Atlantic opponents, particularly given the U.S. only managed a draw with Wales in their first match, but it’s important to remember that England have never beaten the U.S. at a World Cup and they have the quality to cause England trouble.

The U.S. will be most dangerous on the break, given England will likely have a lot of the ball, and in Timothy Weah they have a player of pace and ability. The Lille winger is bound to give England’s leftback Luke Shaw plenty to think about, and we think the 5/1 on offer that Shaw sees yellow offers value.

USA are also well coached, and this may mean chances for England will be at a premium. We came close to landing a 18/1 bet on Monday when Harry Maguire placed his header onto the crossbar, and this time we’re siding with one of his defensive colleagues.

It looks like Kieran Trippier is on free kick duty close to the penalty area, judging by the first game, and given his prowess we’ll take a punt that he nets from outside the penalty area tonight.

Recommendation:

Shaw (England) to be booked, 1 pt, at 5/1, bet365

Trippier (England) to score from outside the penalty area, 1 pt, at 18/1, William Hill
