The Saturday Yankee:
NAP OF THE DAY: Lightly Squeeze, (1535 Sandown), 2pts win, 7/2:
Has long threatened to be a very good handicapper but a crushing fall in. A big Newbury race has taken a long time to shrug off. That said, came back from the off season by cruising to a win at Kempton, and whilst this is a much better race, a 6lb rise looks way too lenient if that indeed signposted the return to his earlier progressive form.
Frero Banbou, (1350 Sandown), 3/1: runs this track very well and handles this ground. Ran a blinder at Cheltenham last spring and ran decently in two comeback races at Ascot in the Autumn. These are his conditions and the time of year we can expect his legendary trainer to start upping the strike rate.
Authorised Speed, (1425 Sandown ), 2/1: not many young hurdlers thrive in the kind of soft ground Sandown’s hurdle course can provide, but Authorised Speed already has a course win in these conditions. His 5th, when first placed of the UK runners, in last season’s Cheltenham Champion Bumper is a mark of his class and it should be enough again here.
Ramses De Teillee, (1500 Sandown ), 6/1: the veterans final and whilst last year’s winner Prime Venture must have a big chance, rather like senior golf majors these tilt significantly to the youngest players. Ramses was a decent handicapper in his heyday and returned to form when first dropped into this company and an all the way winner last time. Not raised much for that, he is been freshened up with this in mind and could be a class apart.
