This week sees the final edition of the WGC-Match Play, from the Austin Country Club in Texas, as the event becomes a casualty of the PGA’s new designated events concept.
Scottie Scheffler is just 8-1 to successfully defend his title, with bookmakers running scared after his Players Championship triumph, But given the unpredictable nature of this format, we’re going to take a deep breath and avoid.
That said, we note that only Americans have made it through to the final in the last four WGC-Match Plays, and so we’re going to side with a Ryder Cup team mate of Scheffler – Patrick Cantlay.
Cantlay is a fairways and greens sort of player, the type that can thrive in this event. He has also finished third at the Genesis, fourth at Bay Hill and 19th at the Players, suggesting he is in good form.
He has won all three of his singles matches in the Ryder and President Cups, a very good record which means we can overlook the fact he has finished 2nd in his WGC group on his previous four occasions.
Recommendations:
Cantlay 1 pt each way at 18/1, 1/4 the odds for the final 4 places, SkyBet
