The Daily Yankee
NAP OF THE DAY: Sonny Liston, (1720 Doncaster), 2pts win, 4/1:
Has been in fine form in major handicaps this season. Handles softer ground really well, but most importantly will need a strongly run race to be at his best. That looks likely here, and he should get the win his excellent efforts have been heavily hinting at all season.
Makanah, (1425 Doncaster), 16/1: The great Autumn series of handicaps kicks off with the Portland. Last year’s 1-2, Call Me Ginger and Chipsted have clear chances, but the 5th there Makanah is a horse we have had plenty of each way success with and he looks to still be on top form despite the advancing years. Drawn away from many of the favourites but with useful place close by he looks a fair price to hit the frame or better.
Gregory, (1535 Doncaster), 9/2: looked tailor made for this when an impressive winner at Ascot. Couldn’t beat a couple of today’s rivals at York last time but may not have received the best of rides, burning valuable fuel trying to turn a 12f race into a true stamina test. Will run prominently again here but should hold enough in reserve to be lethal up this straight.
Lightening Company, (1610 Doncaster), 10/1: Won well under these conditions in April and was a December staying on fourth at Hamilton last time on the level. Has mixed some decent flat form with some awful hurdling, but this is a race of rogues and he is one of only two to register a win this season, he should be half his price.
