Galway & Goodwood Friday: Dad can be mother of all bets….

It is all guns blazing for us as we see fit to unleash a rare 3 point bet on a freaky Friday.

We may be down in Galway for the craic, but our eyes will be on Goodwood and in particular the Group 2 five furlong dash that is the King George Stakes (1530 BST).

A key lesson learned from many years of experience is never be afraid of a big price.  Many punters take fancying a big priced horse as an opportunity to scale down bets as you don’t need to risk much to win big.  The opposite can be true – these are the times to lace up the betting boots and push for glory and riches.

Many will be on Battaash here as the form horse – but none of that form features soft ground.  Profitable won at Royal Ascot on soft last year and is much more appealing of the market leaders.  But this could be the day to catch John Gosden’s sprinter Ardad.  He has in and out form, but his biggest in was when streaking home at Ascot on soft as a 2yo last year.  He hasn’t had that ground again since, but if this triggers a return to that level of form, then a modest 5f dash like this is there for the taking.  Frankie is on board and the price is irresistible.

The big mile handicap (1500) has an open look.  Handicap regulars GM Hopkins and Master The World must have big chances, as does favourite Blair House.  But we prefer both Hors de Combat and First Selection at much bigger prices.  First Selection was 7th in the 2000 Guineas last year and 2nd in the French equivalent, he showed a first glimpse of form this season when running well at York last time and the combination of some cut and the excellent Graham Lee could see him go well.  We love Hors de Combat and will certainly have some change on him, but this course may not be ideal and there may be better days to come.

At Galway, On Fiddlers Green looks for a repeat win (1815) having failed to get into the Galway Plate on Wednesday.  Top weight is no barrier for this strapping chaser, and Davy Russell is the perfect companion, he can go in again.

In the following race (1850), Whiskey Sour looks to follow up a win earlier this week.  That was a very easy win, and this race looks here for the taking.
