Wednesday Races: Danny’s the boy at Redcar

A quality card at Goodwood should be the focus of attention, but recent northern abandonments have resulted in a monster card at Redcar with a series of cavalry charges that we simply can’t resist.

Sticking to the sprints, the 19 runner 5f dash (1610 BST), looks likely to be run at a furious gallop with several front runners to the fore, with the first time blinkered Granny Rox one to watch.

However, the bizarre handicapping of Quatrieme Ami simply cannot be ignored. Just two turf runs as a 2yo included a soft ground Windsor win. Busy on the all-weather, last year saw just two disappointing turf runs on quick ground off marks in the 90s.

More all-weather preceded a turf return off a bizarrely low 79, but two moderate fast ground efforts saw a further drop to just 69 when unlucky to be beaten a head at Yarmouth back on soft, with the rest well beaten.  Even that effort sees a rise to just 70 for today’s race, and with soft ground to suit and the always excellent Danny Tudhope aboard this looks a cracking bet against a big but mostly modest field.

The concluding 6f sprint (1745) looks like another that will blast away from the get-go. Uncle Charlie looks likely to go well, whilst Ypres is capable of springing a surprise.

This could however be the second leg of a Danny Tudhope sprint double as he rides Rapid Ranger.  Trainer David O’Meara often does well with recruits from other yards.  He got this gelding rated 73 and six runs later has yet to hit the mark even off today’s rating of 60.

However his best effort was last time at Catterick when his late challenge looked mistimed and was good enough only for second. He finally gets stable jockey Tudhope up top (first time), and he should judge his effort much more effectively off what should be a blazing gallop.

Recommendations:

Quatrieme Ami, (1610 Redcar), 2pts win, 4/1 Paddy Power, Bet365

Rapid Ranger, (1745 Redcar), 1pt win, 13/2 generally available

“The Tuddy Two-timer”, Quatrieme Ami & Rapid Ranger, 1pt win double, approx 36/1
