Thursday Races: Having a Ball…

Some awful midweek racing and we are sifting with the fine mesh, and the race that catches our eye is a low grade staying chase at Wincanton (1440 GMT).

The main appeal is the lack of interest in the joint favourites.  Leith Hill Legasi comes from a good yard but is an 8yo mare sporting a tongue tie and blinkers and who last won a race two years ago.

The other joint favourite, How’s My Friend is a 12yo with a lifetime record of one win (in a 2012 maiden chase) from 31 starts over jumps.

That’s rest aren’t much better and often worse, but that said there are two runners who have at least registered a win this calendar year.

As a 7yo, How’s Vienna probably has scope for some improvement, the issue is that this will be a first run since April, and  we are always cautious backing horses from small stables first time out.

That sways us to the 10yo Snowball.  He won at Towcester earlier in the year and has already had his comeback run after the Summer break when a decent fourth at Warwick a few weeks ago.

Being beaten under 9l there on his first run since the spring is arguably as good a piece of recent form as any in this field, and with potential to strip a bit fitter this could be his day.

Frankie Penford is a tidy young jockey who has shown he can win races.  The combination look overpriced in a bad race.

Recommendation: Snowball, (1440 Wincanton), 1pt win, 12/1 BetVictor, Bet365
