Sunday Yankee: Could it be Magic?

After yesterday’s 3pt nap heroics from Orvar at Doncaster, it is back to more regular staking at a typical Pontefract Sunday card…

The Daily Yankee

NAP OF THE DAY: Magical Effect, (1700 Pontefract), 1pt win, 3/1:

Disappointed us slightly when carrying our nap into third here recently, but may not have had the race run ideally and was close behind two last-time-out winners so perhaps it was better than our dismay warranted. Was previously very unlucky here, and prior to that a smooth winner here, so is bang in form. Drops back to Class 5 today, having run at this low a level three times in a 35 race handicap career recording a second and two wins. Likely to have too much class and too much form for a mostly motley bunch.

Jabbaar, (1430 Pontefract), 7/1: the potentially progressive 3yo filly Hereby dominates the market and has an obvious chance, but this will be a tougher track than Chester. Jabbaar has run 15 times since his last win placing 2nd or 3rd on 12 occasions such that his rating has barely moved. This suggests the handicapper has his measure but his recent runs have been close to some very progressive animals, and whilst Hereby may be another of those, if there is any chink in her armour this guy is in good enough form to exploit it and the price is very attractive.

Shades Of Blue, (1530 Pontefract), 7/2: a nice little race but this filly should be the pick. Good enough to go down narrowly in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot last year and has progressed this season concluding with a narrow defeat in a 16 runner Group 3 at York when a long way clear of the rest. Hasn’t met softer ground before but should be bred to handle it and is the form horse here dropped back into Listed class.

Springwood Drive, (1730 Pontefract), 3/1: only made her racecourse debut on 19 Jun but has busily recorded three maiden runs plus two handicap efforts, 2nd of 10 at Donny followed by a smooth Haydock win. Raised 6lbs to 68, but could be improving much faster than the handicapper can tag and has a mostly more exposed field to beat. Soft ground conditions should help and she has a nice draw to slipstream the leaders and pounce.
